Synopsis The Confession of John Wilkes Booth (2021)

Enid, Oklahoma, 1903. Alone in a shabby hotel room, David E. George, 65, finishes his last will and testament. George has decided to finally end his life by drinking a glass wine laced with strychnine.

Noted in the will, his former attorney, Finis Bates, is instructed to reveal to the world the true identity of his one-time client; that David E. George is in fact John Wilkes Booth, assassin to President Lincoln.
With his looks and panache, even during the height of the war, Booth was able to travel without repercussions. He tells of his fame, the beautiful women in his life: Lucy Hale, the young socialite of Washington aristocracy, how she becomes his finance, yet at the same time, he is involved with a prostitute named Ella Turner.

Booth has it all, but struggles to find a greater purpose. He obsesses over a vision his mother had at his birth; that he was to achieve something momentous for his country. Booth seeks that greater meaning and is determined to fulfill mother's vision. He wants to join the Army but yields to his mother's emotional plea against it, a decision, which will haunt Booth for the rest of his life.

Searching for a way to help the Confederacy without breaking his promise, Booth starts running supplies across enemy lines. It's thrilling and justifies it knowing he's not carrying a rifle.

Booth's hatred for Lincoln seethes. He wants to do more for the South. Introduced by a mutual colleague, Booth meets Vice-President Andrew Johnson, who shares his vehement opposition to Lincoln's policies. Booth's initial plan to kidnap Lincoln is ridiculed. Johnson leads Booth to the thought of assassination before questioning his patriotism when the actor hesitates to commit to this extreme action. Booth's "hands are clean while the country is steeped in blood." Johnson dismisses Booth.

Torn with despair, Booth visits his sister, Asia. He is drunk and rails against Lincoln along with his mother for trapping him with the promise. Asia pleads with Booth not to do anything rash. Purging his own self-loathing, Booth finds the courage to carry out his duty to the South, to do something important. Something that his stardom never could fulfill.

After meeting Johnson to coordinate the particulars, Booth enters the theater, shoots Lincoln and escapes.
While fleeing capture, Booth hears the report that he was trapped and shot at Garrett's barn by Boston Corbett. The man found in the barn had Booth's diary. He is declared to be Booth. The case is closed. Several people who knew Booth are questioned and forced to identify the body. A distraught Lucy Hale is shocked to see the condition of her beloved but is persuaded, by intimidation of the authorities, that it is Booth. Another witness, doctor John Fredrick May, who had been the actor's personal physician, is forced to sign an affidavit to confirm that the body in question is none other than Booth's. He does so under duress.

All the while, Booth recuperates in the house of Barbara Foster, who maintains a plantation home somewhere in the southwest. He reads the newspapers and realizes they've stopped looking for him.
Booth goes to San Francisco to visit his mother and sister Asia. His mother condemns her son for ruining the family name. "It would have been better for him to be in the grave they say he is in than roving the earth without a home, without a name." She leaves her son, never to see him again, but not before pronouncing the curse of Cain upon him.

After living abroad for several years, Booth is smuggled back to the United States with the help of the Confederate Underground. He heads towards Suwanee, Tennessee, where he finds work at a mill. He entertains children in play-acting. Under an alias, he meets a woman by the name of Louisa Payne. They fall in love, marry and move to Memphis.

Eventually Booth tells Louisa his real name. A strong Christian woman, Louisa forgives Booth for his deception and says that even the assassination was an act of war. She only demands that they remarry using his real name. They do so and for a time live happily.

Having performed in Memphis during the war, Booth is recognized by some of the citizens in town. To protect Louisa and her son, they decide to separate until Booth is able to secure a safe haven. Booth sends Louisa money with the promise of getting settled down soon. Louisa tells Booth that she is expecting a child. The reunion never happens. As in times past, the curse of Booth brings disaster upon their relationship, as Louisa dies in a fire caused by her burning leaves outside her home.

Booth settles in Glen Rose, Texas, under the assumed name of John St. Helen. He gets acquainted with an attorney named Finis Bates. Booth, who suffers terribly from asthma, becomes bedridden. Expecting to die, he confides in Bates that he is the assassin, John Wilkes Booth. But upon recovery, Bates inquires more about the events. Booth, trusting in attorney client privilege tells Bates everything: his escape, the players concerned, and the Vice President's involvement. Booth then flees, disappearing for some time until winding up in Enid, Oklahoma, living under the alias of David E. George.

Boston Corbett, the man who reportedly shot Booth at Garrett's barn, finds work in Enid as a farm equipment salesman. A rumor has spread around Enid of a man claiming to be John Wilkes Booth. With a pistol in hand, Corbett confronts Booth, demanding to know if the rumor is true. Booth declares it is. Corbett, stunned, is struck by the Curse of Booth and dies on the spot of a heart attack.

Back in his hotel room, Booth, having outlived everyone in his life, takes the poison "escaping the blood hounds one last time." As the poison takes hold, Booth defames the slain president, saying for certain that he, Booth, made Lincoln immortal. Booth slowly dies in his bed.
